Once the drawings have been completed they're transferred onto film and viewed. At this point no coloring of the characters, backgrounds, or special effects have been added. This is known as the line test, because all the characters appear as line art.

Viewing the movie in this way allows the director to determine if it conveys its message, feeling, and spirit before all the coloring and effects are added. Just as each image is drawn individually, each drawing must be colored individually. If changes are made during the line test the coloring does not have to be repeated.
