The epic story of Balto and the "Great Race of Mercy to Nome" has been immortalized in the present day Iditarod race. In 1925, the "Great Race of Mercy to Nome" traversed 674 miles following a mail route from Nenana to Nome. Each year the Iditarod race, in memory of Balto's run, covers the entire 1,049 mile mail route from Anchorage, through Nenana, to Nome.
